The mic goes quiet. The log book closes. The call sign rests.
"Silent Key" is the radio community's own term for an operator who has died — a quiet, respectful way of saying the key won't be keyed again. This page is Radi-Oid's version of that respect: a place for the operator, and real help for whoever's left looking at the shack.
It's Not Just Wires
When an operator becomes a Silent Key, the family is often left standing in a room full of boxes, cables, and things with dials on them — and no idea what any of it is, what it does, or what it's worth. It can look like junk. Some of it might be worth a genuine amount of money.
Radios get put out for the bin men, or a house-clearance company takes the lot for a flat fee because nobody knew any better. That's the thing we're trying to stop.
Before You Clear Anything
Radio people are often on their own with this hobby — some have a club behind them, plenty don't. Either way, a few things are worth setting aside before anything goes in a skip:
- ✓Anything with a display, dials, meters, or a microphone — even if it looks old or dusty. "Boat anchors" (heavy vintage gear) are often the most valuable pieces in the room.
- ✓Log books and QSL cards — postcard-sized records of contacts made. Sentimental to other operators, sometimes collectible, and proof of a lifetime on the air.
- ✓Any callsign certificate or licence paperwork — it tells you who they were on the air, and often points to a local club that knew them.
- ✓Antennas, coax, power supplies, and "the box of bits" — accessories are often worth more together than the radio itself.
- ✓Anything handmade or modified — home-built gear from an operator who built their own kit can be worth far more than a shop-bought equivalent.
Photograph the Shack
Take a photo of each piece. Our AI identifies it, gives an honest value, and builds a proper inventory — with a version you can keep and a version you can hand to a buyer.

How It Works
Tell us about them
Their name, callsign if you know it, anything about them or the shack. Entirely optional — it just helps the AI give better answers.
Photograph the collection
One item per photo works best. Don't worry about lighting or angles — if you can see it, Radi-Oid can identify it.
Get two copies of the inventory
One with everything and every price, for your own records. One with everything listed but no prices shown, to hand to a buyer or dealer and let them make the first offer.
Find a fair way forward
If they were part of a local radio club, that's often the fastest route to people who knew their gear and can advise honestly. If not, we'll connect you with a trusted dealer — someone the community knows buys fairly, not someone offering 10% of the value for the lot.
Radio Doesn't Always Come With a Club
Plenty of operators have a local club, a group of mates, a net they check into every week — if that's the case here, they're probably the first call to make, because they'll already know the gear and knew the person. But a lot of hams and CB operators do this alone, by choice, and their family is left with no one in the hobby to ask. This page exists mainly for them.
Official Guidance — RSGB
The Radio Society of Great Britain is the national body for amateur radio in the UK — not a dealer, but the official first port of call. Alongside licensing support, exam coordination, the national QSL bureau, and RadCom magazine, RSGB provides guidance and support specifically for Silent Key estates, including connecting executors with local affiliated radio clubs to help appraise, value, and responsibly dispose of shack equipment.
